The Four-Question Lesson Framework

What, Why, How, Now what — the structure behind every lesson that actually changes behavior.

instructional designteaching

Drop this onto any lesson, any subject. Every lesson worth a learner's time answers four questions in order. Miss one and it wobbles.

The four questions

  1. 1What — name the one skill or idea, plainly. One per lesson.
  2. 2Why — connect it to something the learner already wants. Lead with their outcome.
  3. 3How — show the method with an example concrete enough to copy.
  4. 4Now what — give one small action to take right now, while it's fresh.

Why it works

Skip the Why and they don't care. Skip the How and they can't act. Skip the Now what and nothing changes once they close the tab. The frame forces all four.
